We have an immediate requirement for a Design Manager to lead our team of Design Coordinators, working on our IPW National Grid Framework based out of our office in Altrincham. We have won £43m of work over 19 sites/3 years with National Grid, delivering the infrastructure for substation security upgrades. Well thought out design management is essential for the construction of the project to go smoothly. The Design Manager will be responsible for compiling design status reports and effectively monitoring a team of design coordinators for a peak of 12 projects in detailed design.

Key Objectives:

  • To ensure that the individual projects are delivered to the programme
  • To liaise with the QS to ensure the NEC contract is administered – coordinate early warnings and PMI’s between the Client and the Principle Designer.
  • Liaise with framework to ensure reports are produced on a monthly basis

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • To update the Planners each week with progress on the design for each project, delegating this to the design coordinators where necessary
  • Liaise with the QS to ensure is delivered by pre-agreed dates with the design partner
  • Reduce costs where possible and provide details of cost savings
  • Receive updates from the Design Co-ordinators
  • Decide if the RFI or TQ has an impact on the scope and issue appropriate notice with the assistance of the site QS
  • Chair internal monthly contract review meeting to update all interested parties on design progress during the design phase
  • Manage the design process during the pre-construction and as required, the construction phase
  • Fully investigate value engineering and value creation opportunities
  • Interrogation of enquiry documents, in the form of an Employer’s requirements
  • Production of a Contractors proposal document in liaison with other internal departments
  • Manage our design process via external consultants where necessary
  • Drive innovative and cost effective solutions into the design
  • Progress design issues within a strict timescale & ensure Designers meet information delivery dates
  • Review Subcontractor design proposals
  • Verify & control status of consultants and subcontractors drawings and specifications & maintain registers
  • Ensure the Principle Designers scope of services, responsibilities and fees are agreed and updated
  • Engage specialist supply chain as required
  • Facilitate the completion of a project risk register
  • Produce a temporary works management procedure
  • Manage a team of Design Coordinators according to the design load of the framework
  • Report on closing out of elements identified in the process safety triangles and identify areas where positive points can be achieved in the future

Key Skills and Background:

  • A strong background in civil engineering or building environment
  • A background of detailed design management coordination for a contractor or consultant
  • A history of successfully working as part of a management team on civil engineering design and/or construction projects
  • Knowledge of undertaking civils and/or building design in a design office environment preferred
  • Awareness of the commercial factors applicable to tendering & value engineering
  • Ability to check design drawings and raising technical queries
  • Knowledge of BIM processes and ability to use BIM model viewing software
  • Familiarity with structural design software preferred
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, and work in collaboration with other team members
  • Willingness to travel periodically throughout UK, and to Designers offices
  • Previously working with National Grid or on electrical infrastructure advantageous
  • Numeracy and bid/report writing


  • Civil Engineering qualification
  • CSCS card
  • Excellent IT Skills including Microsoft Office is essential
  • Full driving licence
  • Professional Membership with ICE is desirable
